Jewelry Making Tip of the Week – August 31st – Fishing Line for Beading

by Karen on August 31, 2009

Fishing line such as Fireline, Powerpro, and Trilene are great for beading! They are very strong and won’t stretch out of shape over time.  I like to use at least 10lb strength but 6lb is fine if you are using smaller, light weight beads that do not have sharp edges. Mono filament is good for stringing but not for intricate bead weaving as it is not as flexible. Fireline Crystal is an opaque white color which works great with lighter color beads. You will get the best value if you buy a large role at Wallmart or a Sporting goods store rather than buying a jewelry making supplier branded version.

Thanks for this great tip! I have heard this “secret” before. I do however, have a bit of a big question: what do you recommend as an eco-friendly alternative?
There are biodegradable fishing line varieties available, but I would imagine that is not ideal because they will potentially have a shortened life over traditional fishing line. Do you know of one that is perhaps not biodegradable but at the very least made of recycled materials?
Thank you!

Hmmmm….. I’m going to have to think about that. Perhaps one of our readers have a good suggestion.
